About two years ago, fake images became a real social media problem, but now they seem to appear in vendor presentations, job applications, press kits, and financial documents.

The Challenge: AI-Generated Images Are Getting Better

I run detection tests almost daily. Over the last 18 months, the trend has been steadily toward the fact that AI generators are getting better and detectors are, of course, adapting.

Most people think that the tools that have worked best in this test do visual pattern matching but they don’t. They’re reading statistical artifacts at the pixel level and that will not change from one generator to another.

The tools that failed will probably be using signal libraries that have been superseded by the latest model versions.

How I Ran This Study (Methodology)

Choosing the Right Tool: Accuracy, Speed, and Cost Trade-offs

Accuracy: Both tools identified all 10 images created by AI and made one false positive for a combined accuracy of 95%. For this test, the same real industrial image caused the false positives for ZeroGPT and Deep AI.

Speed: ZeroGPT can analyze images within 2-5 seconds, depending on the size of the images and the server load. The DeepAI API can process images by utilizing simple REST API endpoints and can respond within 5-7 seconds.

Accuracy: Only one tool besides Hive that got no false positives with actual photos. All real images had a score of 24% or less, with the majority of images having a score of less than 10%.

More often than not, enterprise deployments fail during the configuration step, rather than the tool selection step.

The False Positive Problem: Why Accurate Does Not Mean Perfect
